Dorset Hosts Olympics 2012 Sailing Events

Weymouth, just 20 miles drive from Lyon's Gate, and Portland will be hosting all the sailing events for both the 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games. Between July and September 2012 people will be flooding to the area to enjoy both the spectacle of the events and also the chance to see the famous faces that it will undoubtedly attract.

With the prospect of so much attention the area has been, and will continue to be, gearing up to cope with the onslaught.

November 2008 saw the completion of upgrades at Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour ready for the 2012 Olympics. Completed ahead of schedule the enhancements to the WPNSA facilities include a new 250m slipway along with new lifting and mooring facilities to provide world-class facilities.

Currently ongoing is the regeneration of the former Naval Air Station at Portland, now known as Osprey Quay, where new residential, commercial and marina facilities are being built. During the Olympic and Paralympic Games sailors, coaches and officials will be housed in new low-carbon homes built at Officer’s Field, Osprey Quay, Portland, Dorset. After the Games these homes will be made ready for sale and occupation with twenty five per cent of the units being made available as affordable housing.

To ease traffic congestion in Weymouth for the games, work has begun on a £9m scheme which will replace five roundabouts with 'intelligent' traffic lights designed to improve traffic flow. The traffic works are being done to help accommodate the extra visitors for the Olympic games, as well as ease general congestion in the town. In addition to traffic works there are also planned improvements to rail and bus networks, all designed to keep things moving during the games. All in all it's going to be a busy time leading up to, and right through the games. Luckily Lyon's Gate Caravan Park will still be your peaceful retreat, just far enough away to avoid the hustle and bustle but close enough to travel to the action. Why not book your pitch now before everyone else finds out?
